Are You Washing Your Hair Correctly?
Updated: Jan 2
We all assume we are washing our hair correctly, but are we? A good home hair care regime will keep your hair in tip-top condition between appointments.
Ever wonder why we recommend that you shampoo your hair twice? The first shampoo breaks down build up, whilst the second cleans your hair thoroughly. Following these guidelines may mean longer between washes.
Conditioning your hair
Condition the mid-length to ends of your hair only as your roots produce your natural oils. Try and leave a deep conditioner on as long as possible. Wearing a cap (even clingfilm) can help keep in your natural heat.
What's the difference between a surface conditioner and a deep conditioner treatment/mask?
Normal surface conditioners only nourish the outer layer (cuticles) of your hair sealing them down after a shampoo. These are light enough to be used every day.
A deep conditioner treatment or mask normally says to leave on for 15 or more minutes. Hair Treatments are used to help treat damaged hair and penetrate into the hair shaft, giving you a longer lasting effect. These should be used once a week.
Brushing your hair when wet
After washing or conditioning always use a wide tooth comb or tangle teaser brush, never a normal brush on wet hair. To remove tangles always brush from the tips of your hair working your way up to the root. Work through hair in layers.
Never put your hair up whilst wet. This will prevent breakage as the hair is at its most fragile when wet. To protect your hair further, try using old T-shirt instead of wrapping hair up into a towel as it's less abrasive.
